Pelosi Statement on Leadership of Committee on Oversight and Reform in Investigating the Former President's Efforts to Unlawfully Reverse the Election

Statement

Date: Aug. 5, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Speaker Pelosi issued this statement on the Committee on Oversight and Reform's leadership in investigating former President Trump's efforts to unlawfully reverse the results of the election. On Friday, the Committee successfully obtained handwritten notes taken by then-Acting Deputy Attorney General Richard P. Donoghue of a December 27, 2020 phone call with former President Trump and former Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen, which reveal attempts by the former President to directly pressure the two most senior officials at the Department of Justice to overturn the certified results of the 2020 election or risk losing their jobs:

"Sadly, the recent assaults on our democratic system have taken many forms. The revelations about former President Trump calling upon the Justice Department to "just say that the election was corrupt' and "leave the rest to me' bring shame to the office he held.

"Oversight and Reform Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney, the Committee and Committee staff raised this issue, launched an investigation and obtained evidence of President Trump's abuse of power. Their leadership on this issue is historic, and deserves the respect and gratitude of all Americans who believe in our Democracy. The documents obtained by the Oversight Committee include handwritten notes documenting the former President's unprecedented efforts to overturn a free and fair election and corrupt the Department of Justice. The Chairwoman's persistent pursuit of the truth will contribute greatly to the work of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.

"As the Chair of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, which has oversight responsibilities for all federal government operations, Chairwoman Maloney is a champion in the fight to crush the virus and expose waste, fraud and abuse among many other priorities.

"As Chairwoman Maloney continues her important work, she does so with the respect and gratitude of all who follow the work of the House of Representatives. She is a true patriot: a leader who serves her constituents and our country with honor."
